Neonatology Nurse Practitioner

<strong>Position Overview </strong> <p>A <strong>Neonatology Nurse Practitioner (NNP) </strong> is an advanced practice registered nurse specializing in the care of <strong>newborns, particularly premature, critically ill, and high-risk infants </strong>. NNPs primarily work in <strong>Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) </strong>, providing life-saving medical care in collaboration with neonatologists and multidisciplinary teams. </p> <strong>Key Responsibilities </strong> <strong>Patient Assessment & Diagnosis </strong> <ul><li>Perform comprehensive physical assessments of neonates (including preterm and critically ill infants) </li><li>Diagnose and manage acute and chronic neonatal conditions such as:<ul><li>Respiratory distress syndrome </li><li>Neonatal infections/sepsis </li><li>Congenital abnormalities </li><li>Prematurity-related complications </li> </ul> </li><li>Order and interpret diagnostic tests (e.g., blood gases, imaging, lab work) </li> </ul> <strong>Clinical Management </strong> <ul><li>Develop and implement individualized care plans for neonates </li><li>Manage ventilators and other life-support systems </li><li>Prescribe medications, fluids, and nutritional support (including TPN) </li><li>Monitor and adjust treatment plans based on patient condition </li> </ul> <strong>Procedures </strong> <ul><li>Perform specialized neonatal procedures such as:<ul><li>Intubation and airway management </li><li>Umbilical line placement (arterial and venous) </li><li>Lumbar punctures </li><li>Chest tube placement </li> </ul> </li><li>Assist with resuscitation during high-risk deliveries </li> </ul> <strong>Delivery Room & Emergency Care </strong> <ul><li>Attend high-risk births and provide immediate newborn care </li><li>Lead or assist in neonatal resuscitation efforts </li><li>Stabilize critically ill infants for transfer if needed </li> </ul> <strong>Family Support & Education </strong> <ul><li>Educate and counsel parents regarding their infant s condition and treatment </li><li>Provide emotional support during critical or end-of-life situations </li><li>Involve families in care planning and discharge preparation </li> </ul> <strong>Collaboration & Care Coordination </strong> <ul><li>Work closely with neonatologists, pediatricians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other specialists </li><li>Coordinate care across departments and during transitions (e.g., NICU to home) </li><li>Participate in multidisciplinary rounds </li> </ul> <strong>Documentation & Compliance </strong> <ul><li>Maintain accurate, detailed patient records </li><li>Follow hospital protocols, safety standards, and regulatory guidelines </li><li>Participate in quality improvement initiatives </li> </ul> <strong>Qualifications </strong> <ul><li>Master s or Doctorate degree in Nursing (MSN or DNP) </li><li>Certification as a <strong>Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP-BC) </strong> </li><li>Current RN and APRN licensure </li><li>Neonatal Resuscitation Program (<strong>NRP </strong>) certification </li><li>Advanced Cardiac Life Support (<strong>ACLS </strong>) and Basic Life Support (<strong>BLS </strong>) (as required) </li> </ul> <strong>Preferred Skills & Competencies </strong> <ul><li>Advanced knowledge of neonatal physiology and critical care </li><li>Strong clinical decision-making and problem-solving skills </li><li>Ability to perform high-risk procedures with precision </li><li>Excellent communication and family-centered care approach </li><li>Ability to work in fast-paced, high-stress environments </li> </ul>
