Engineering Manager – Metal as a Service (MAAS)

Canonical is a global open‑source leader, publishing Ubuntu and powering the world’s most scalable cloud platform. The MAAS team delivers a cloud‑style API for bare‑metal provisioning, networking and storage, running on a Python and Go stack that spans physical hardware to a web interface, API and CLI.

Location

Work‑from‑anywhere – EMEA or the Americas.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a distributed team of engineers in your time zone, organizing teams by Americas, EMEA, etc.
  • Develop talent through coaching, mentoring, feedback and career planning.
  • Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management and external stakeholders.
  • Advocate modern software development practices and advance them across the company.
  • Participate in engineering processes through code and architectural review.
  • Engage with broader Canonical teams, the open‑source community and partners.
  • Travel to internal and external global events for 4 to 6 weeks per year.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science or related field.
  • Proven experience delivering software using Python, Go, or similar languages.
  • Experience with Linux system administration – Debian or Ubuntu preferred.
  • Familiarity with modern Linux cloud computing technologies, including networking, storage, containers and Kubernetes.
  • Technical aptitude for understanding complex distributed systems.
  • Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills.
  • Experience with agile software development methodologies.
  • Ability to mentor, develop and support team members.
  • Result‑oriented personal drive to meet commitments.
  • Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events up to two weeks long.

Nice‑to‑have Skills

  • TypeScript with modern web frameworks (React, Angular, Vue, Svelte).
  • Data Center infrastructure management and design.
